Two Mississippi Ku Klux Klan members face federal weapons charges after police say they had guns in a truck parked at the University of Mississippi.
The two were not students at the University, but they were there to protest a resolution asking officials at the college to remove the state flag because it has the Confederate flag emblem.
University police on Thursday arrested Kyler Campbell and Virgil Dennison. An FBI agent said in federal court records that the men are Klan members….
U.S. attorney’s office spokesman Chad Lamar said the men are charged with possessing a firearm in a school zone.
Campbell remained jailed Monday. Dennison was released on house arrest and must undergo a mental evaluation.
The flag, which many view as racial oppression and intimidation, was removed from campus on Monday.
According to KSL, the two Klan members had the guns in a truck parked on the campus.
Campbell remained in custody at the Lafayette County Jail late Monday.
Dennison was released on house arrest and must undergo a mental evaluation, Lamar said.
Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant (R) signed a bill that would allow residents to carry a concealed gun in a purse, briefcase or other fully enclosed satchel without a state-issued license. That law went into effect on July 1st.
By law, concealed guns are allowed on campuses in that state, but schools can choose to forbid them.
We can’t imagine what could go wrong with members of a hate group carrying weapons on a college campus to express their passion for the hate flag,
It’s about ‘heritage’ though, right?
