Republican Presidential candidate Ben Carson said recently that he doesn’t want the United States to take in refugees, then went on to compare them to “rabid dogs.”
The former neurosurgeon is facing scrutiny over his lack of knowledge in foreign policy, so he plans to visit with Syrian refugees in Jordan Friday.
“I find when you have firsthand knowledge of things as opposed to secondhand, it makes a much stronger impression,” Carson said in an interview before his departure to Jordan, planned for late Thanksgiving Day on a charter aircraft, the New York Times reports.
“I want to hear some of their stories, I want to hear from some of the officials what their perspective is,” Carson said. “All of that is extraordinarily useful in terms of formulating an opinion of how to actually solve the problem.”
Caron plans to go to the Azraq refugee camp in northern Jordan to visit a clinic and a hospital.
He is planning to distribute gifts to children; soccer balls and Beanie Babies.
Recently Carson said, “If there’s a rabid dog running around in your neighborhood, you’re probably not going to assume something good about that dog. And you’re probably going to put your children out of the way.”
Carson continued to say that though you might not “hate all dogs,” he said it it was intellectually sensible to “call the Humane Society” to place them into a safe environment.
Well, he’s not wrong about gaining insight into the problems refugees are having to deal with, but after his offensive comparison, it would be like Donald Trump visiting a treatment center for the physically disabled.
As for brining the children there gifts, that’s an awesome idea. The best gift he could give them though, is safety from ISIL.
