Read it and weep.
The Living Way Ministries Church in Opelika, AL, posted this message comparing Roy Moore to Jesus on their outdoor sign in support of the Republican Alabama U.S. Senate candidate who is accused of sexually assaulting underage girls.
When a photo of the sign went viral on social media, the church phone began ringing off the hook with calls from protesters.
Is it any wonder? Who in their right mind would compare a child molester to Jesus?
According to WHNT-News 19, a person who answered the church phone said the message was not posted by the pastor but by someone else who had the keys to the sign.
Social media users are also questioning why this church is still able to receive tax exemptions since their nonprofit religious status strictly prohibits them from participating in any campaign or promoting any candidate for public office. The ban on political campaign activity by charities and churches was created by Congress more than 50 years ago.
According to the IRS’s website:
Currently, the law prohibits political campaign activity by charities and churches by defining a 501(c)(3) organization as one “which does not participate in, or intervene in (including the publishing or distributing of statements), any political campaign on behalf of (or in opposition to) any candidate for public office.”
It’s worth noting that within the GOP tax plan coming up for a vote is a provision that will be changing this century-old law. That’s right, they no longer want any separation of Church and State; they want churches — especially their evangelical voters — to campaign for GOP candidates but still maintain their tax-exempt status.
Sadly, it’s not the first time conservatives have made the Moore/Jesus comparison. An Alabama official who also supports Moore’s choice of young girls — err, candidacy — told news reporters, “Take Joseph and Mary. Mary was a teenager and Joseph was an adult carpenter. They became parents of Jesus.”
OMFG! (No pun intended)
