Police say an 11-year-old Gaylesville, Alabama, boy was killed Sunday night after his father “accidentally” fired a gun while cleaning it. The gun discharged, hitting Dad in the hand, then the bullet hit the child while he was sitting on the couch. In addition, the mother was struck by the bullet in the elbow.
Both parents were taken to the hospital for medical treatment. Their son wasn’t as fortunate as his parents.
According to CBS, Cherokee County Sheriff Jeff Shaver said that police were called to the home in Gaylesville, Ala. — about 100 miles northeast of Birmingham — around 9:30 p.m. on Sunday.
Shaver says the child was pronounced dead at the scene.
The sheriff’s office is still investigating the shooting, with help from the Major Crime Unit. DeKalb County officers and first responders from nearby fire departments also assisted in the investigation, according to WDAM.
The child’s name has not been released. In fact, he parents’ names are not released either.
Yes, we should protect the irresponsible gun owners at any cost, while their deceased child merely becomes a statistic. I’m not sure when cleaning a gun while it’s loaded became a thing, but there’s a lot of that going around lately.
It’s almost as if the parents don’t like their children very much. Apparently, Dad didn’t like his own hand, or his wife’s elbow very much either. Cleaning his gun with his son and wife in the line of fire was as irresponsible as it gets. This could have easily been prevented.
And we thought you weren’t supposed to aim your gun at anything you didn’t want obliterated, regardless as to whether you think it’s loaded or not. Silly us.
