Ed Henry, the Alabama Republican state representative for Hartselle, told the Cullman Times last night that women accusing US Senate candidate Roy Moore of sexual misconduct should be prosecuted.
Because whatever Roy Moore does, it just has to be a woman’s fault.
“If they believe this man is predatory, they are guilty of allowing him to exist for 40 years. I think someone should prosecute and go after them,” Henry said. “You can’t be a victim 40 years later, in my opinion.”
Henry believes that Moore is the victim — of a conspiracy by the “establishment,” which fears the longtime culture warrior will upset their control of government.
He argues that Moore can’t possibly have molested anyone so long ago or the victims would have come forward sooner.
“If this was a habit, like you’ve read with Bill Cosby and millions of dollars paid to settle cases and years of witnesses, that would be one thing,” Henry said, ignoring the fact that many of Cosby’s victims waited decades to come forward.
Nor can Moore claim that his actions were not a “habit,” as he courted at least four different girls between the ages of 14 and 18 while he was in his thirties, and those are just the ones we know about right now. The way these stories go, others will likely emerge.
“You cannot tell me there hasn’t been an opportunity through the years to make these accusations with as many times as [Moore]’s run and been in the news,” Henry said.
Yes, why didn’t these accusers come forward back then, when women who accused men of rape and molestation were slut-shamed much, much harder than they are today?
Surely they didn’t wait so long because they were afraid of retaliation, or that their children would be harmed, or that their careers might suffer, or that assholes like Rep. Henry would threaten them with prison. Surely!
One could make the same nonsensical argument for Harvey Weinstein. Though accounts of his sexual assaults and harassment reach all the way back to the 1970s, his accusers went unheard until just a few weeks ago. It’s doubtful that Rep. Henry would absolve Weinstein this way, however, because the Hollywood mogul is famously liberal.
Incredibly, Rep. Henry was still not done shoving his foot into his mouth. Spouting a conspiracy theory about “the establishment,” Henry predicted that Democrats will eventually pay Moore’s accusers for leveling these allegations during the special election campaign.
“I’m not buying it,” Henry said. “It’s too easy for someone to make these accusations. It’s foolish to go down that road, it’s like what if a frog had wings, he wouldn’t bump his ass every time he jumps.”
Even setting his corn pone aphorism aside, Rep. Henry makes no sense here because no woman has ever had an easy time holding any man accountable. His threat of prosecution for coming forward this late makes it even harder to do so.
