No one expected that World War II veteran John Middlemas would become a Twitter sensation, least of all the 97-year-old grandfather who is being showered with love on social media after his grandson posted a photo of him taking a knee in support of the NFL players.

By Sunday afternoon, Gilmore’s tweet of his grandfather showing solidarity with the NFL players had been retweeted almost 135,000 times, and has drawn almost 355,000 likes, and generated over 4,500 replies.

“My Grandpa has been an ally to the civil rights movement for many years,” Gilmore said in a follow-up tweet. “He’s an amazing man always on the side of justice.”

Middlemas took a knee about an hour and a half before NFL players, coaches and owners began defying Donald Trump, who spent his entire weekend hurling vulgar insults at the NFL players, demanding they be fired and even later threatening that the entire league should be boycotted.

The NFL, the player’s union, and most team owners called Trump’s attacks offensive, inappropriate and divisive, with many NFL coaches, including former head coach Rex Ryan, saying they were appalled at Trump’s attacks on the black athletes. And while Trump spent his weekend ranting on Twitter against the players, his controversial comments led to more owners, coaches, and players joining the demonstrations on Sunday.

Standing in opposition to this so-called president, all but two of the 32 NFL teams now have issued statements in support of their players.

Donald Trump says his remarks have nothing to do with race. Of course, they do. It’s all about race with this man who has held black and brown people in contempt for decades, dating back to the 1970s. If you don’t believe me, check the public records.

Note to our readers: Please share/tweet our articles. Trump supporting trolls targeted our accounts and reported them en masse, without cause. This triggered seemingly automatic suspensions. Twitter support has failed to address this issue. Thank you!
