It wouldn’t be a devastating hurricane without the Far Right blaming it on everything except climate change.
And so it goes with Far Right activist Dave Daubenmire, who Forbes once facetiously nicknamed “America’s Most Christian Football Coach.” Daubenmire is blaming Hurricane Harvey on God’s judgment for America’s sin: Houston’s lesbian mayor and abortion.
Forget the fact Sylvester Turner has been the mayor of Houston since January 2016. Everyone knows Mr. Turner is not a lesbian. Daubenmire is referring to Annise Danette Parker, who served Houston well as mayor during her six-year tenure in office, starting in 2010. The city thrived under Parker’s helm.
So what we have here is Daubenmire’s alt-religion.
During a bombastic rant from Daubenmire’s Pass The Salt Ministries, which he runs from his blog site Coach Dave Live, he said, “Houston, we got a problem here. Could some of the problems be the result of the judgment of God coming your way because of the slaughter of unborn children? You had a lesbian mayor who wanted to look at the prayers of pastors in their churches. It’s debaucherous.”
“People tell me that Houston, Texas is one of the darkest cities in America,” Daubenmire continued. “Isn’t it amazing, Katrina slammed New Orleans—we know about voodoo and the darkness in New Orleans. Then it moved right down the coast to Houston, Texas … Boom, here it comes, now it’s underwater. Water is a sign of judgment and cleansing. Is now not the time for the voice of the church to rise up and declare, ‘Let’s stop killing the babies!’”
“I don’t want this to appear to be judgmental, but I don’t know what else to do!” he roared. “I don’t know what else to do!”
This evangelical right winger isn’t just against lesbians and abortion; he’s against most everything. But the world will be over soon, so stop worrying. At least that’s what Daubenmire told his followers in a piece he posted on his Facebookpage August 21. The post read in part: “The eclipse is today. There’s nothing we can do to stop it. The end of the world is 33 days after that, apparently. There’s nothing we can do about that either.”
Hold on, let me mark that September 23 date in my calendar.
If you want to know how Daubenmire feels about life in these United States, just ask him. Wait, you don’t have to. As Forbes wrote, there are plenty of blog posts and videos in his Pass the Salt Ministries.
