No, it’s not Saturday night yet. But on Thursday, Saturday Night Live aired their “Weekend Update Summer Edition,” and if you’re all kinds of confused about what day it is, we don’t blame you. All we know is, Alec Baldwin brought back his impression of Donald Trump and wasted no time digging right in.
The setting this time was Trump’s rally on Tuesday in the largest city in the Sonoran desert, Phoenix. Maybe all that desert sun got to Donnie’s brain because it started crazy and got even crazier. It’s almost like Trump is setting Baldwin up for minimal effort.
Sure, he took a jab at Trump staring directly into the solar eclipse. And he had to mention the auspiciously-placed excited black guy behind Trump at the rally. But the skit really got going once faux-Trump got to the topic of Charlottesville:
As we all know, there was a tragic victim that came out of Charlottesville — me. Folks, the media has treated me so unfairly by reporting my entire remarks, even the bad ones.
The real president, of course, spent an uncomfortable amount of time in Phoenix reading his own remarks on the Charlottesville tragedy. But rather than quoting himself verbatim, Trump left out the part that actually pissed everyone off, when he blamed the violence that ended in Heather Heyer’s death on “many sides, many sides.”
Given Trump’s actual statements on convicted former sheriff Joe Arpaio, Baldwin’s poke at his potential pardon wasn’t too far off the mark. He asked “how [it was] a crime” for Arpaio to arrest people simply for looking Latino.
Baldwin’s Trump described how he “solved” Afghanistan. He laid out his plans to shut down the government if necessary to get his border wall. He even brought up Louise Linton, the wife of his Treasury Secretary. Linton made news this week with some tasteless comments to an Oregon mom on Instagram.
