Donald Trump just pulls numbers out of his ass. Like when he said millions of people voted illegally on election day. On Tuesday, Trump tweeted, “Boeing is building a brand new 747 Air Force One for future presidents, but costs are out of control, more than $4 billion. Cancel order!”

Republican pollster Frank Luntz corrected Trump on his claim. In fact, no one knows where Trump got that particular figure from. As GOPocalypse points out, the current jets have been in use for nearly 30 years now.

Boeing responded to Trump’s criticism, saying the contract is actually for $170 million.

“We are currently under contract for $170 million to help determine the capabilities of these complex military aircraft that serves the unique requirements of the President of the United States,” Boeing said in a statement.

“We look forward to working with the US Air Force on subsequent phases of the program to deliver the best planes for the President at the best value for the American taxpayer.”

Trump told reporters Tuesday that the plane is “totally out of control” and that costs are “ridiculous.”

“I think Boeing is doing a little bit of a number. We want Boeing to make a lot of money but not that much money,” he said.

The Hill reports:

The Pentagon announced in January that Boeing had won the contract to replace the current Air Force One planes. The initial contract was worth just $25.8 million, but the Air Force planned on spending as much as $1.65 billion on the project, according to Reuters.

In short, $4 billion =/= $170 million.
