Not content to let Trump have all the fun this election cycle, Rick Perry, the former governor of Texas and one-time presidential candidate, will be joining Ryan Lochte and Vanilla Ice in the next season of Dancing with the Stars.
ABC revealed contestants for next season of DWTS Tuesday morning. The cast also includes retired football player Calvin Johnson, Indy race car driver James Hinchcliffe and Olympian Laurie Hernandez.
ET Online conjectured that the former Texas Governor is joining the cast of DWTS because reality tv was so effective for Trump. Perry might think that if “countless seasons of The Apprentice and Celebrity Apprentice on NBC” can make Trump a household name that partnering with Emma Slater will help his career. Perry claims he is joining the cast to help veterans. He tweeted Tuesday morning:
Perry appeared on Fox News’ Fox & Friends Tuesday. When asked if he was in New York City for the Dancing with the Stars announcement, he said:
“I’m in New York not for any big announcement, I’m in New York because my daughter is getting married and she’s getting her gown finalized today. I will say if this rumor does turn out to be true. It would be a great thing to know how to dance at your daughter’s wedding.”
Perry is not the only cast member hoping that the DWTS franchise can help rehabilitate their image. Recently disgraced Olympian Ryan Lochte will also be joining Rick Perry next season. Lochte’s claim about being robbed at gun point during the Rio Olympics was a fabrication to cover his destructive behavior, including an altercation with a security guard, while drunk. The stigma of that incident is proving difficult to shake especially since Lochte downplays what happened by merely calling it a “big mistake” Lochte, unsurprisingly, wants the press to move on:
“I mean it’s been dragged out way too long. The media has taken this to a whole new level and I just want to put this behind me and move on and move forward. I think the rest of the world wants this, too. There’s other bigger issues that this world is facing.”
Even before this incident Lochte had a pretty crappy reputation. Jezebel considered Lochte one of America’s “sexiest douchebags.” Now Lochte is hoping that DTWS can help people move on and see a different, less douchey, side of him. He said:
“The past two weeks have been the lowest point of my life. It’s been really hard. But the fans, my family, my friends, they’ve all been really positive, keeping me going. And that’s what I wanna do. And this is perfect with the show because I want to put that behind me. I’m never one to dwell on the past. I just want to move forward and I want the whole world to move forward. Everyone’s got to be sick and tired of hearing about this. I know I am.”
Lochte and Perry will be joining reality tv veteran Vanilla Ice. Ice famously destroyed an Mtv set when asked to “retire” the music video of “Ice, Ice Baby.” He’s also appeared on “The Surreal Life”, “The Surreal Life: Fame Games” and appeared on the sixth season of “Dancing on Ice” in the UK. In 2009, Ice starred in his own reality series, The Vanilla Ice Project. These bids to recapture fame, however, have not been overwhelming successful.
While what’s in it for the contestants is obvious, it’s less clear what exactly DTWS hopes to accomplish with this cast.
Let the best douche win.
