Department Of Justice: Trump Is Wrong, Obama Never Wiretapped Trump Tower

In a Friday night news dump for the ages, the Department of Justice has told a federal court that neither the FBI or its National Security Division ever wiretapped Trump Tower as the so-called president has claimed.

“Both FBI and NSD confirm that they have no records related to wiretaps as described by the March 4, 2017 tweets” from Donald Trump’s personal Twitter account, the filing says.

Until now, the Department of Justice has declined to officially comment on Trump’s bizarre claim that “Obama had my ‘wires tapped’ in Trump Tower just before the victory.” But experts, journalists, law enforcement professionals, and career intelligence officers have pointed out that presidents do not actually have the power to place individual US citizens under surveillance.

Fired FBI Director James Comey has testified before Congress that there was no FBI wiretapping of Trump Tower. Former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper has also denied that any of the 17 agencies he oversaw ever monitored any Trump Organization phone.

The DoJ submitted the filing in a Freedom Of Information Act lawsuit brought by American Oversight, a nonpartisan government transparency organization. The group had asked the court for “Warrant applications or records requesting a court order to intercept communications related to candidate Donald Trump, Trump Tower, entities housed in Trump Tower, or any person affiliated with Mr. Trump’s campaign; court orders approving or rejecting those requests; records of those wiretaps, and; communications between the FBI or DOJ and Congress relating to these issues,” according to Nina Burleigh at Newsweek.

Austin Powers, the Executive Director of American Oversight, tells Burleigh that the DoJ has “confirmed in writing that President Trump lied when he tweeted that former President Obama ‘wiretapped’ him at Trump Tower.”

As the president and his legal team continue their smear campaign against Mr. Comey, Special Counsel [Robert] Mueller and others investigating him, this filing confirms that even Trump’s own Department of Justice does not believe he has credibility on a key element of the Russia investigation.

Now thoroughly discredited, Trump’s wiretapping charge was an inflammatory diversion from news related to his Russian influence scandals. As a legal matter, the president’s tweets are not just lies, but potential evidence for consciousness of guilt in the event that he is ever charged with obstruction of justice.

  1. Ah who cares, the trumpers don’t even remember this claim. Every week we have a new drama we are dealing with, so going back months to show once again trump lied ends up being a waste of time. Hell, North Korea now can launch a “H-bomb” and trumps handling of Harvey is even seeming to over take that news. We are expecting China and Russia to protect us (Untied States) because our idiot in chief is too busy effing everything up. We are screwed, and not in a good way.
