Donald Trump: I was Not Mocking The Reporter’s Physical Disability

Republican Presidential candidate Donald Trump attempted to defend himself after he mocked a reporter’s physical handicap.

Trump denied on Thursday that he was mocking the appearance of a reporter for The New York Times who has a physical disability — but clearly he was.

On Twitter, Trump wrote, “I do not know the reporter for the @nytimes, or what he looks like. I was showing a person groveling to take back a statement made long ago!”

And that’s a lie.

During a rally in South Carolina,. Trump wildly flailed his arms while imitating Serge Kovaleski in order to justify his incredible claim that ‘thousands’ of Muslims danced in the streets in New Jersey and on rooftops when the World Trade Center fell on 9-11-2001 from a terrorist attack.

Even though Trump said he’s never met Kovaleski, at the rally, he described him as a “nice guy” before he began mocking his disability.

“Now the poor guy, you ought to see this guy,” Mr. Trump said, before jerking his arms around and holding his right hand at an angle — clearly mocking the reporter. “ ‘Ah, I don’t know what I said! I don’t remember!,'” Trump said at the rally.

The New York Times reports:

Mr. Kovaleski, who covered Mr. Trump extensively while he was a reporter at The Daily News, has arthrogryposis, which limits the functioning of his joints.

In his statement on Thursday, Mr. Trump maintained that he had never met Mr. Kovaleski.

“I have no idea who this reporter, Serge Kovalski [sic], is, what he looks like or his level of intelligence,” Mr. Trump said.

“Despite having one of the all-time great memories, I certainly do not remember him,” he continued. “What I do know is that after 14 years and no retraction, this reporter tried to pull away from the tailgate party paragraph he wrote many years ago for The Washington Post.”

While criticizing the Times, Trump insisted that he “merely mimicked what I thought would be a flustered reporter trying to get out of a statement he made long ago.”

The GOP frontrunner went on to say that if “Mr. Kovaleski is handicapped, I would not know because I do not know what he looks like. If I did know, I would definitely not say anything about his appearance.”

We posted this earlier, but it needs to be shown again.

However, during an interview, Kovaleski said he had Trump repeatedly when he was a reporter for The Daily News before he worked for The Washington Post.

“Donald and I were on a first-name basis for years,” Mr. Kovaleski said. “I’ve interviewed him in his office,” he added. “I’ve talked to him at press conferences. All in all, I would say around a dozen times, I’ve interacted with him as a reporter while I was at The Daily News.”

Even if we felt generous enough — and we do not — to give Trump the benefit of the doubt, why would he mock a disabled man and think it’s OK simply because he never met him? Either way – and we know Trump is lying – he is way out of order. He does not display presidential qualities. Imagine President Obama doing this.

And to suggest he didn’t know that the reporter is disabled, is such a stretch. (citation: see image above).
