Pearce Tefft and his entire family have denounced his son’s racist views and said he is no longer welcome in their home or at family gatherings following the hate rally in Charlottesville, Virginia in which he and his Nazi friends stormed through the streets shouting Nazi Germany era slogans. The ‘Unite the Right’ rally resulted in the murder of Heather Heyler, 32, and left 19 others injured.

Mr. Tefft penned an open letter to Inforum in which he explained that his son, Peter, was not taught his racist views at home.

“I, along with all of his siblings and his entire family, wish to loudly repudiate my son’s vile, hateful, and racist rhetoric and actions,” Tefft wrote.

“I have shared my home and hearth with friends and acquaintances of every race, gender, and creed. I have taught all of my children that all men and women are created equal,” he continued. “That we must love each other all the same.”

Mr. Tefft went on to say that silence is no longer an option.

“We have been silent up until now, but now we see that this was a mistake,” he wrote. “It was the silence of good people that allowed the Nazis to flourish the first time around, and it is the silence of good people that is allowing them to flourish now.”

“Peter Tefft, my son, is not welcome at our family gatherings any longer,” he wrote, until “my prodigal son will renounce his hateful beliefs and return home.”

The father recalled Peter saying, “The thing about us fascists is, it’s not that we don’t believe in freedom of speech. You can say whatever you want. We’ll just throw you in an oven.”

In response to that, Mr. Tefft wrote, “Peter, you will have to shovel our bodies into the oven, too. Please son, renounce the hate, accept and love all.”

Jacob Scott, Pete Tefft’s nephew, weighed in to say that his family “wholly rejects” him both “personally as a vile person who has HIMSELF made violent threats against our family, and also his hideous ideology, which we abhor.”

“We are all bleeding-heart liberals who believe in the fundamental equality of all human beings. Peter is a maniac, who has turned away from all of us and gone down some insane internet rabbit-hole, and turned into a crazy nazi,” Jacob continued, according to WDAY. “He scares us all, we don’t feel safe around him, and we don’t know how he came to be this way. My grandfather feels especially grieved, as though he has failed as a father.”

The family has received threats, but they should not be held responsible for Peter Tefft’s dark turn. I, too, am related to a couple of extreme right wingers. We don’t speak anymore either.
