After the Trump administration appointed Scott Pruitt to head the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the media erupted into a firestorm over the blatant hypocrisy of appointing a man who, not only denies scientific evidence supporting climate change, but was appointed to follow through on President Trump’s campaign promise to “get rid of” the agency in its entirety.
During his tenure as the Attorney General of Oklahoma, Pruitt shut down his office’s Environmental Protection Unit, proving he has little to no regard for climate pollution standards. Not only that, but he also sued the EPA 14 times. Seriously. Fourteen times.
Anyway, now this is the guy who’s in charge of the EPA, and he was put in the position to help the Trump administration follow through on their goal of “streamlining” the agency.
The Trump administration wants to slash the EPA’s budget by 31 percent, or almost a third, from $8.1 billion to $5.7 billion, according to a budget proposal released last month. The cuts would wave goodbye to approximately 20 percent of the agency’s staff or about 3,200 positions.
But here’s where things become ironic.
Although the proposed budget cuts may garner support from Republican voters, it’s now been brought to light that the agency issued an official request last week to add positions to its Office of Enforcements and Compliance Assurance “to provide 24/7 security detail” for EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt, The Washington Post reports.
To put that into perspective, Gina McCarthy, former head of the agency under President Barack Obama, received what’s called “door-to-door” protection — which means she received protection at her residence, but not for 24 hours.
When asked for clarification regarding the increase in protection, the EPA did not respond to The Post‘s request for comment.
According to Myron Ebell, who lead the EPA transition team for the Trump administration, says it makes sense for Pruitt to receive increased protection.
“I think it’s prudent given the continuing activities by the left to foment hatred and the reported hostility within the agency from some unprofessional activists.”
I mean, it makes total sense, right? Cut funding to the EPA, and with the money you save, spend it on “protecting” Scott Pruitt from “angry liberals” who are pissed about the fact that a climate-change-denying-psycho with absolutely no regard for the environment is the head of the very agency set in place to protect such interests.
I guess that’s Trump team logic for you.Click here for reuse options!
