Fire Chief Calls Steelers Coach A ‘No Good N*gger’ Over NFL Anthem Protest

Paul Smith was frustrated his Pittsburgh Steelers didn’t take the field during the national anthem before their game against the Chicago Bears on NFL Sunday. So guess how the chief of Cecil Township, PA’s volunteer fire department showed his frustration? He took to Facebook to call Steelers coach Mike Tomlin a “no-good n*gger.”

Mr. Smith, if your gut reaction to the NFL player protest against racial injustice was to call another African-American the “N” word, you might be a racist. And that is the crux of the problem: white people like you spewing racial epithets and worse at people of color as if they were sub-human.

The reaction of Cecil Township residents, where Smith serves as chief of Volunteer Fire Station #2, was quick and negative, as CBS Pittsburgh reports.

Dylan Pareso, who lives across the street from the fire hall, said, “I’m completely upset, especially for a town like this, coming from the fire chief, that’s disrespectful in my eyes. I don’t agree with it one bit.”

Mary Plumley told CBS Pittsburgh, “For a fire chief or for anybody like that to say something like that is wrong. They don’t need to be in that position.”

“It’s not good. No, I don’t like it at all,” Janet Vickers said. Wes Leopold reacted to Smith’s post, saying, “It’s kind of a dumb thing to do. I think, there’s enough tension in this country. He’s definitely adding to it.”

Embarrassed his racism was showing, Smith reached out to CBS Pittsburgh to apologize, calling his comment a case of bad judgment.

“I am embarrassed at this. I want to apologize. I was frustrated and angry at the Steelers not standing the anthem. This had nothing to do with my Fire Department. I regret what I said.”

“My fire department should have never been dragged into this. It was a bad judgment by me, for which I am very embarrassed, for them and my township.”

What exactly Fire Chief Paul Smith’s apology means to the world, no one can be sure. Was he sorry for his inappropriate racist remark, or just sorry he got caught spewing such racism on his Facebook?
