Today is Groundhog Day so, of course, it was time again for Congressional GOPunxsutawneyPhilers to get together and try to overturn Obamacare..
Since Republicans took over the House majority in 2011, they have tried — and failed — 63 times to undo Obamacare. Today, however, was their first attempt to override President Obama’s veto of a measure to overturn all or part of his signature legislative accomplishment.
Republicans needed a lot of Democratic votes to repeal the president’s healthcare law and defund Planned Parenthood at the same time, but there was no chance that it was ever going to happen. The final vote was 241-186.
Earlier in the day, Republican Speaker of the House Paul Ryan could not contain his excitement over the possibility of taking health insurance away from 22 million Americans. Ryan said:
Regardless of the outcome today, this fight will not end here! We have now forged a path — that is a clear path — to repealing Obamacare without 60 votes in the Senate.
Ryan’s not so giddy this evening.
It was a big win today for President Obama when Republicans were not able to rally the support of two-thirds of the House to override his veto of the bill — and defund Planned Parenthood in one swift blow. And now that the veto vote has failed in the House, the Senate won’t be able to consider it.
I don’t know about all of you, but I’ve grown weary of the GOP “repeal and replace” shtick. They’ve never once brought up a viable replacement plan because they don’t have one. The only plan they have is to take away healthcare from more than 20 million Americans and replace it with the health insurance system of the bad old days, when patients had no rights, premiums were exploding, and coverage was at the whim of the insurance company.
Happy Groundhog Day!
