A deputy’s three-year-old daughter (not pictured) in Georgia shot herself in the leg then had to be airlifted to the hospital. The sheriff calls the incident an ‘accidental’ shooting after the toddler shot herself in the leg.
Sheriff Lynn Sheffield told WMGT that the little girl’s injury is non-life threatening.
The sheriff said the child’s mother was in the bedroom and the toddler was in another room playing at a home in Rhine.
The mother was moving a television on a chested drawer with a gun was on the furniture.
According to Sheffield, the mother moved the weapon to the bed.
As she proceeded to move the television, she heard the gun go off.
The toddler then crawled onto the bed and accidentally fired the gun into her right leg, Sheffield said.
Sheffield called the shooting a “horrible accident.”
The names of the victim or the parents have not been released but Sheffield confirmed that the child is the daughter of one of his deputies.
The father was not home at the time of the unintentional shooting.
Sheffield added that the gun in question was not his service weapon. It was a personal gun.
Wait for it.
Sheffield told 41NBC that he’s not anticipating filing any charges.
There was no word on why the wife of a deputy did not have her husband’s firearm secured, but instead decided to leave a loaded weapon lying on a bed, after removing it from a piece of furniture as if it were a non-lethal item like a pillow or a lamp.
The sheriff and his wife can obtain a trigger lock usually free of charge from — wait for it — the police station.
