Sen. Ted Cruz told some real whoppers during an appearance on NBC’s Meet The Press today. That’s nothing unusual — Cruz is easily the most dishonest candidate in the entire presidential race — but host Chuck Todd seemed to think only one of his lies was worth getting upset about.
For example, Cruz attacked Donald Trump with popular myths and fables regarding transgender restroom access:
(Y)ou know, to illustrate how out of touch the New York and Washington elite are, just a week ago Donald Trump came out on television, agreeing with Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton that grown men should be allowed to use little girls’ restrooms. Now I view this issue as a matter of basic common sense. I don’t think it’s a right or left or Republican or Democratic issue. It’s common sense. Listen, I’m the dad of two little girls. It doesn’t make any sense to allow grown adult men — strangers — to be alone in a bathroom, and virtually all Americans understand that, and it is only the height of political correctness that refuses to acknowledge it.
Although Todd failed to press Cruz on his defamation or dispel his fabrications, to his credit, the host did ask for the candidate’s reaction to Caitlyn Jenner’s recent visit to Trump Tower — whereupon Sen. Cruz tried talking from both sides of his mouth.
What I say is very simple. If you pass a law, as Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump and Barack Obama want, that says any adult man can go into a girl’s restroom if he feels like a woman at that minute — listen, the real danger is not people who are transgendered. It’s people who are predators. People who are predators who use that law as an excuse to go target our kids. That is a real dangerous – I’ve spent a lot of years in law enforcement dealing with cases of some of the worst child molesters, people who do horrible things to kids.
Ted Cruz isn’t prejudiced against Caitlyn — he’s bravely opposing all the child molesters who pretend to be Caitlyn so they can get at his daughters, see? Note that, just like other anti-transgender culture warriors, Cruz cannot provide a single actual, verifiable example of this scenario ever happening anywhere outside of his imagination.
It would be nice if Chuck Todd had grilled Cruz on such details, but of course he doesn’t think it’s the media’s job to correct falsehoods. So it was somewhat surprising when, as he questioned Cruz’s persistent attacks on his rival Trump, one mendacious assertion finally seemed to get under Todd’s skin.
Todd: Why can’t you answer the question of whether you can support Donald Trump or not? You can’t answer that question. Why won’t you answer that question, straight forward, black and white?
Cruz: Todd, let me finish this point I’m making. Even though the media stands to make millions of dollars off of the debate, you hear radio silence from the media about no debates. They’re giving up millions of dollars and the reason is, your network’s executives are partisan Democrats. Why doesn’t every TV station…
Todd: You don’t get to just say that, it’s just not true. But go ahead. You’re broad brushing here, and this is exactly what people hate about the media and politics. Broad brushes, right?
Which is hilarious, because Chuck Todd’s network has in fact taken great pains to become less liberal lately, while he has made an entire career out of shallow Beltway groupthink and unhelpful ‘both sides’ analogies. How dare Ted Cruz accuse him or his network of liberal bias! Why, in the news business, that’s equivalent to smearing someone as a pedophile.
