It looks like John McCain is finally sick of Donald Trump’s shit. After years of watching Trump crap all over him, America, the Constitution, women, and immigrants, the senior senator from Arizona has had enough.
In a segment discussing the Selective Service draft that aired Sunday on C-SPAN3’s American History TV, McCain took aim at the wealthy draft-age potential soldiers who effectively had their own chances of being called up stifled by getting their doctors to sign off on questionable ailments.
“One aspect of the conflict by the way that I will never ever countenance is that we drafted the lowest income level of America and the highest income level found a doctor that would say that they had a bone spur. That is wrong. That is wrong. If we are going to ask every American to serve, every American should serve.”
It was a direct reference to Trump’s five draft deferments that kept him out of the jungles of Vietnam due to calcium buildup in his feet, commonly referred to as “heel spurs” or “bone spurs.”
The comments come on the heels (pun intended) of the public spat that has been brewing between the military hero and the former reality television star. After McCain gave a speech last week that criticized “half-baked, spurious nationalism,” the flavor of patriotism favored by Trump and his supporters, Donnie Daycare shot back that McCain may “need to be careful, because at some point I fight back.”
McCain laughed off Trump’s hollow threat, saying “I’ve faced greater challenges than this.”
Indeed, McCain has faced greater insults, at least, from the president himself. Back in July of 2015, Trump foreshadowed the lack of respect he has for the American military by questioning McCain’s service outright. At the time, Trump said “[McCain]’s not a war hero. He was a war hero because he was captured. I like people who weren’t captured.”
