Kati Layne Quackenbush, 26, a single mother of a 5-year-old, has been accused of shooting a homeless man on August 26th. The victim has been identified as 54-year-old Gerald Melton. He was brought to the Vanderbilt University Medical Center where he is listed in critical condition.
The incident was reported to have happened around 3:00 in the morning when Melton couldn’t sleep due to the loud music and the exhaust fumes omitted by Quackenbush’s Porsche so he asked the owner to move the SUV. Things soon escalated and the two got into a heated argument. Quackenbush got out of her car, fired two shots at Melton and drove off. She had a passenger in the car with her.
Jesse Quackenbush, the father of the accused who is a Texas attorney, released a statement claiming that his daughter fired warning shots without meaning to hurt the victim. In his statement, he claimed that she was “acting in self-defense” as Melton violently approached them and hurled abuses. His statement suggested that the victim was not just quarreling but in fact, approached the girls in a way that threatened them. But Katie fired two rounds then drove away. The father said in his statement that his daughter “didn’t Try and kill this guy”.
It’s obvious that he is aware of the legal arguments that could help his daughter.
The Tennessean reports, “Metro police detectives say that Melton was “trying to sleep on the sidewalk” around 3 a.m. near 901 19th Ave. South near Music Row when he “became disturbed by exhaust fumes and loud music coming from a Porsche SUV.”
Quackenbush is due to appear in court on October 6th. As of now, the accused has been released from jail on a $25,000 bond.
