According to audio obtained by comedian Harry Shearer, Mika Brzezinsky and Joe Scarborough engaged in some friendly banter with Donald Trump during MSNBC’s town hall last week.
Because the conversations took place during commercial breaks, audiences never saw Trump ‘joking’ that the questions should be softballs, or heard Mike and Joe discussing which questions to ask and which to avoid.
Available at Shearer’s website, the audio can be confusing for listeners because producers who are not wired for sound are involved in the discussion with the hosts. But the most interesting parts are quite audible, such as this fawning moment of mutual gratification when Brzezinski talked about Trump bringing two men up to the podium at a recent rally to thank them for throwing out a protester.
“We played it several times this morning,” Scarborough put in.
“I watched your show this morning,” Trump responded. “You have me almost as a legendary figure, I like that.”
After that, Brzezinski thanked Trump for agreeing to the interview. “You, you get great ratings and a raise,” he told her. “Me, I get nothing.”
“This will make us all look good,” Trump said, to which Scarborough replied, “Exactly.”
During the next break, there was a friendly exchange about Trump fans intimidating reporters:
Scarborough again discussed the upcoming questions. “I’ll talk about the Ron Fournier thing,” he said.
“Oh god!” Trump responded. “Leave him out of it.”
“He understands now,” Scarborough said of the National Journal editor, adding that The Washington Post‘s Chris Cilizza “has completely changed.”
“Three months ago, he went home,” he said of Fournier. “He’s from Michigan, and he got an earful went he went home, and so he changed things. And what he said was, ‘I am no longer going to attack the people who support Trump.’”
Brzezinski can also be heard asking Trump “Do you not want me to do, the um, the ones with, um, deportation?”According to a transcript of the event, there were no questions about immigration or deportations during the town hall.
Although the MSNBC hosts have clashed with Trump before, Shearer’s audio is bound to redouble questions about whether the Morning Joe team is too close to the reality show star. The town hall itself was an obvious ploy to detract attention from a similar event that CNN held with Trump’s rivals.
Brzezinski and Scarborough have also taken criticism for being too close to fossil fuel billionaires Charles and David Koch.
