After it was revealed that House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La), 49, who ascended to the House GOP’s third-ranking post this year, was a speaker at a convention for White Supremacists in 2002, Republicans are stepping up to support him.

House Speaker John Boehner: issued the following statement in support of  Scalise:

More than a decade ago, Representative Scalise made an error in judgment, and he was right to acknowledge it was wrong and inappropriate. Like many of my colleagues on both sides of the aisle, I know Steve to be a man of high integrity and good character. He has my full confidence as our Whip, and he will continue to do great and important work for all Americans.”

It’s not just Boehner.

Gov. Bobby Jindal and Rep. Steve King also defended Scalise. The House Majority Whip claims that he had no idea that he was speaking at a conference filled with white supremacists.

How does one not know? There are clues everywhere, such as the people in the audience. The event was so toxic that a minor league baseball team from Iowa moved to a different hotel in order to avoid the — wait for it — white supremacists who were attending the event – the ones Scalise was supposedly unaware of.

Naturally, the hashtag #ScaliseExcuses was created:
