John Oliver now has his own church, Our Lady of Perpetual Exemption. Oliver targeted televangelists, some who travel around in private jets while seeking to swindle donations from devout Christians while the church is afforded tax-free status.

“The argument is, sow your money in the ground and you will reap multiple returns many time over,” Oliver said. “Except, as an investment, you’d be better off burying your money in the actual ground because at least that way there is a chance your dog may dig it up and give it back to you one day.

“Not only is everything you’ve seen so far legal but the money people donate in response to it is tax free,” Oliver said. “Because if you’re registered as a religious nonprofit, or especially a church, you are giving broad exemptions over taxation and regulation.”

Oliver showed a video clip of evangelist Mike Murdock in which he explains to  believers who have credit card debt to send him $1,000. You see, if the followers send him an extraordinary amount of  money, the evangelist explains that God will eliminate their debt.

Just like that. All your debt is gone by going into more debt.

“Think about that,” Oliver said. “That is the equivalent of saying, ‘The key to losing weight lies at the bottom of this giant Costco bulk bag of Peanut Butter M&M’s, go find it, it’s definitely down there.’”

So Oliver created his own church with assistance from Sister Wanda Jo Oliver and went on to urge his new followers to meditate on the nature of fake non-profit money-grubbing tax-avoiding churches.

Our Lady of Perpetual Exemption is soliciting donations the website states, “Upon dissolution, any assets belonging to the Church at that time will be distributed to Doctors Without Borders.”

“Our Lady of Perpetual Exemption will not be able to accept donations from Church supporters from the states of Mississippi, Nevada, Pennsylvania, or South Carolina. We apologize for any inconvenience,” he explains.
