When Donald Trump was elected president of the United States, he selected Senator Jeff Sessions as his Attorney General. Following the acceptance hearings, Sessions was sworn in as U.S. AG and that left his Senate seat in Alabama open. Enter Republican candidates Luther Strange and Roy Moore, who are currently fighting a contested battle royal for the vacated seat.
Former Alabama Attorney General Luther Strange is the chosen favorite of Trump because Strange endorsed Trump and just because Trump wants to be pissy with McConnell. Strange is currently filling the vacancy after being appointed by Alabama governor. Roy Moore is the favorite of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell. Moore is also the favorite candidate of Phyllis Schafly even though she’s kind of dead.
While the battle rages on, it is important to examine the type of people these candidates are and why they are favored by the higher-ups. We don’t really like either one and this should not in any way be considered an endorsement of either. Luther Strange doesn’t have a totally volatile past, so let’s just concentrate on why McConnell likes Roy Moore so damn much, shall we?
The Hill states it plain and simple that Moore has a checkered past:
The candidate was forced to resign from his position on the Alabama Supreme Court for his enforcement of the state’s previous ban on same-sex marriages after a federal court declared the unions legal nationwide.
Although that is probably Moore’s most well-known skeleton, he has plenty of them stuffed in a closet too small to contain them. One of those is that Moore was the founder of The Foundation for Moral Law, a religious legal organization opened in 2002 that he has used for political purposes in the past. Specifically, to smear then-president Barack Obama.
In 2015, Moore’s organization shared a video on Facebook titled “OBAMA THE MUSLIM, HIS OWN WORDS” which included out of context clips of then-president Barack Obama. We’ve posted the video at the bottom of this article, but the Facebook player seemed to be having some issues, so you can also try to view it by clicking this link. The video was an open attempt to make the world believe that Obama was a Muslim, even though:
Obama is a self-professed Christian who was born in Honolulu, Hawaii. During his childhood, Obama spent several years living in Indonesia, a Muslim-majority country.
From The Hill, one of the most obnoxious clips included Obama saying:
So I have known Islam on three continents before coming to the region where it was first revealed. That experience guides my conviction…
The clip was edited to omit the ending:
…that partnership between America and Islam must be based on what Islam is, not what it isn’t.
Clever editing is a frequent trick of the GOP to frame the conversation in their favor. Just the other day, Sarah Huckabee-Sanders used a partial quote from Obama to support something vile said by Trump.
If you are an Alabama voter and you are heading to the polls, please examine the candidates carefully. Surely someone will jump out at you as a better candidate than former judge Roy Moore.
We’re just including this video because it’s funny AF to watch Moore fumbling through his campaign announcement and sucking up to Trump:
