A Los Angeles man is accused of fatally shooting his son because he was gay. According to prosecutors, Shehada Issa, 69, threatened to kill his son in the past because of his sexual orientation.

Issa was arrested Tuesday after police arrived at his home and found the bodies of his son Amir, 29, and his wife, whose name has not been released, dead.

Issa has been charged with one count of premeditated murder as a hate crime, with prosecutors alleging he killed his son for being gay, CBS News reports.

Issa told the police that he shot his son in self-defense after he discovered his wife’s body in their house. Police say the investigation is ongoing regarding the wife’s death. She was reportedly stabbed to death inside the home, but a knife has not been located.

On Friday, the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office said that Issa had previously threatened to kill his son for being gay.

“The murder was committed because of the victim’s sexual orientation and because of the defendant’s perception of that status and the victim’s’ association with a person and a group of that status,” prosecutors said in a statement.

“He claimed (the son) was armed with a knife, and there was no knife to be found (there). It was a horrible family tragedy,” Detective John Doerbecker said.

Authorities believe the father used a shotgun in the son’s fatal shooting.

According to the Daily Mail, Amir left an expletive-filled video on his Facebook page in which he had a heated debate with two people he identifies as his parents about their sex life.

At one point during the exchange, the man, thought to be his father, calls him a pervert and says he should be castrated.

Issa could face life in prison, if he is found to be guilty.

Issa was being held without bail.
