A Labor Day rally in New Jersey turned violent as yet another Donald Trump supporter viciously attacked someone in an unprovoked incident in Asbury Park on Monday.
Police have arrested 22-year-old Morris May of Scotch Plains, just an hour up the Garden State Parkway from Asbury, after he accosted a transgender woman making signs for the rally. Allison Kolarik tried repeatedly to walk away, according to NBC New York, but was blocked by May. He eventually attacked her with pepper spray.
May was wearing a shirt that said “For Those About To MAGA We Salute You,” a play on the 1981 AC/DC record For Those About To Rock, We Salute You. The shirt also depicted the cartoon meme “Pepe the Frog.” Pepe is a symbol adopted by Alt-Right trolls and provocateurs to identify one another on the internet. May’s brother accompanied him, wearing a shirt with a likeness of Trump himself on it.
The two traveled to Asbury Park ostensibly for the sole purpose of harassing people. Unfortunately for them, they were victims of the common misconception that there are many more racist, bigoted, asshole Trump supporters in this country than there actually are.
The Labor Day Stand Against Hate rally went on as planned. Ms. Kolarik attended the event even after suffering the attack. Asked why she continued on to the rally despite being the victim of a felony assault, Kolarik had possibly the most perfect answer I’ve seen yet.
What are you going to do, let it take over? Let people like that win?
Absolutely not, Allison. Good on you for standing your ground and going on to the event you made the signs for.
May’s brother was not arrested. May himself was charged with aggravated assault and unlawful possession of a weapon. Both charges are felonies in New Jersey.
There was no Alt-Right presence at the rally. So, for now, it appears that May elected to carry out the assault on his own.
