A pastor in Ohio was  shot and killed while standing at the pulpit during services at a Dayton church. According to witnesses, the pastor’s brother was taken into custody.

The victim, 70-year-old William Schooler, was described as a beloved community leader, according to CBS. According to witnesses, the pastor was shot down while the choir was singing.

Authorities say the shooting happened at about 12:30 p.m. Sunday at St. Peter’s Missionary Baptist Church, however, an official statement has not been released yet.

Attendees in the church reported that the shooter walked up to the pastor and opened fire while the choir was singing.

The witnesses said the pastor had just walked back to the pulpit when the brother of the pastor who was seated in a pew got up and followed him to the pulpit.

That’s when witnesses said they heard a couple shots fired. The scene was described as chaotic and worshippers “took off running.”

Parishioners reported streaming out of the church after the shooting.

According to WHIO, the alleged shooter was identified as 68-year-old Daniel Schooler, and was described as having a troubled and violent past. Family members say he suffered from mental health issues.
