Man Opens Fire On Police As Officers Are Being Sworn In At Minnesota City Hall

During a swearing-in ceremony for officers in New Hope, Minnesota, a man opened fire on police, striking two officers before police returned fire, killing the man.

The officers are expected to survive.

CBS Minnesota reports:

The New Hope City Council started its meeting at about 7 p.m. Monday with two police officers being sworn in. Authorities said at about 7:15 p.m., as the two officers were leaving the meeting, an adult man engaged them and opened fire on them.

As a city council member began a discussion of a resolution, a man with a handgun began firing, according to Henntepin County Chief Deputy Mike Carlson.

The man’s motive is not clear and his identity has not been released yet.

Video footage of the incident was captured.

“Get down! Get down! Everybody get down!,” a city council member is heard saying.

“Somebody got shot!” another says.

About 30 police cars descended on the scene after the shooting. Officers looked through windows of parked cars to be sure there wasn’t a second suspect.



Both officers are listed in good condition.

The shooting occurred in a residential areas, which unnerved nearby residents.
