On Friday night, Vice President-elect Mike Pence attended the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical Hamilton. While the reaction of the crowd was mixed, it’s pretty clear the cast had a specific message for Pence when star Brandon Victor Dixon addressed the audience.
We, sir, we are the diverse America who are alarmed and anxious that your new administration will not protect us, our planet, our children, our parents, or defend us and uphold our inalienable rights. We truly hope that this show has inspired you to uphold our American values and to work on behalf of all of us.”
This message is even more powerful when you realize it is coming the cast of a show whose main character, Hamilton, is played by Javier Munoz – an openly gay man with HIV. Why? Not only, will Pence be the right-hand man to racist President-elect Donald Trump, but as governor of Indiana, Mike Pence was dedicated to undermining the rights of the LGBT community. His support of a gay marriage ban is just the tip of the “hate iceberg.”
I noticed that some people are saying that it wasn’t their place to say something, or that it wasn’t the right time or place. They couldn’t be more wrong. That is the kind of backward ass thinking that is setting us back fifty years. There shouldn’t be a time and place to stand up for what’s right. We shouldn’t wait for perfect opportunities to stand up for yourself, your friends and even a complete stranger. We should create them. Kudos, to the cast of Hamilton for not only voicing their disdain, but for “going high when they go low.” It truly is easier said than done. Especially when you are addressing someone who has shown to give zero f*cks about your rights, your health or even your life. Still, one can only hope that the message didn’t fall on deaf ears.
