Last week Donald Trump called NBC News correspondent Andrea Mitchell Hillary Clinton’s PR person in an interview with The New York Times’ Maggie Haberman and Glenn Thrush.
This week it’s Andrea Mitchell’s turn to fire back, and boy did she — ripping Trump a whole new a**hole in her interview for The Global Politico, a podcast on world affairs in the Trump era, released by Politico on Monday.
First of all, Mitchell would like to get something straight: She’s not some pro-Clinton hack.
“I’ve covered seven presidents now, and have not endeared myself to any of them. That’s the job. We are adversarial,” the NBC News veteran said.
Not only did Mitchell slam Trump’s administration for its incessant lies and limited media access, she ripped into the Trump White House for its unprecedented efforts to deceive the public.
“I have never seen anything like this where people just flat-out lie,” Mitchell said. “You know, black is white and white is black, and they mislead you. It’s really disconcerting to see the podium in the White House briefing room being used to mislead or misdirect or obfuscate.”
And then there’s the matter of Secretary of State Rex Tillerson. Mitchell, who has spent a lifetime on the diplomatic beat, cannot believe that Tillerson has denied State Department journalists access here and abroad. Worse, they will not be permitted to accompany the secretary on his diplomatic trip to Moscow next week.
What are Trump and his minions hiding?!?
“There is just an attempt, and it’s successful, to shut down not just me but The New York Times, The Washington Post, Agence France-Presse, CNN. I mean, we’re all just shut out,” Mitchell said. “You should not be flying into Beijing without a press corps. You should not be going to Moscow without the press corps. It’s wrong.”
The 70-year old Mitchell is “as hungry on the Trump beat as she was standing outside Washington landmarks in the 1980s, shouting questions at Ronald Reagan next to Sam Donaldson.” The secretary of state may be flying minus the standard press, but she’ll be hopping a commercial flight to be there to cover him anyway.
She also took a personal jab at Trump for defending Bill O’Reilly in that same NYT interview, saying he doesn’t believe O’Reilly should’ve settled the numerous sexual harassment lawsuits filed against him in recent years.
“I guess he feels an affinity with his friend Bill O’Reilly but I’m not sure how the president of the United States would know that Bill O’Reilly shouldn’t have settled,” Mitchell said. “I do think that it was remarkable that he defended Bill O’Reilly without knowing the facts.”
Well-known for her willingness to ask tough questions, the word “aggressive” appears in every article ever written about Mitchell’s journalism. No doubt a lot of that has to do with the fact she’s a woman, but that’s a whole other story.
