No Charges Expected After Uncle ‘Accidentally’ Shoots 2-Year-Old In The Face On Christmas

A 2-year-old Oregon girl was shot in the face Christmas morning by a family member while he was cleaning a .45 caliber handgun and yet, no charges are expected to be filed.

The toddler is in stable condition after being shot in the cheek and is expected to survive, the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office said.

KATU reports that the child’s 24-year-old uncle was cleaning his gun when it went off. The bullet went out the other side of the girl’s cheek, authorities said.

Sergeant Don Boone said the shooting appears to be accidental and he expects no charges will be filed.

The child was flown to the hospital in a LifeFlight helicopter just after 11 a.m. where she underwent emergency surgery.

“She’s a very lucky child,” Sgt. Boone said without one bit of irony after a toddler suffered a gunshot wound to her face.

Sgt. Boone added while cleaning a firearm, always unload your gun, and always assume that it’s loaded.

Yeah, that’s sort of a given if you’re a responsible gun owner. It would also be wise to not have a baby in the vicinity while cleaning a gun and especially never aim it at something or someone you don’t want destroyed.  The two-year old was only 6 feet away when the gun went off. The wound was just mere inches from the center of her head.

A baby is shot in the face on Christmas and no charges will be filed. The officer said the little girl is ‘lucky’ but we beg to differ.
