The operator of a popular hunting ranch in Texas ‘accidentally’ shot and killed his 9-year-old grandson while the pair were hunting together, according to authorities.

The Wise County Sheriff’s Office says a 9-year-old Wise County boy was accidentally shot and killed by his grandfather Saturday morning while hunting on the ranch the family runs, Fox 4 News reports.

According to Investigators, the child’s shooting death happened around 10:00 a.m. during a controlled pheasant release at the 9 Bar Ranch just outside Decatur.

Nine-year-old Callen Little, his parents and grandfather were in a hunting stand.

Callen left the stand.

The grandfather accidentally shot the boy in the chest as the birds were released, according to Fox 4 News.

“He’d left the stand for some reason and then the birds were released and when they shot, they shot into the direction where the boy was, and he was struck in the chest,” Wise County Sheriff David Walker said.

Sheriff Walker went on to say that the ranch has had an impeccable safety record.

Authorities are looking at the shooting as an ‘accident.’
