After House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) and his colleagues presented Americans with a godawful replacement to Obamacare which ended in a humiliating defeat for amateur president Donald Trump, the former reality show star showed interest in working with Democrats. Ryan, however, just smashed those hopes to pieces by saying in an interview that he does not want to work with Democrats on healthcare legislation.
“I don’t want that to happen,” Ryan told CBS News’ Norah O’Donnell in an interview that will air on Thursday morning. “You know why? I want a patient-centered system. I don’t want government running health care. The government shouldn’t tell you what you must do with your life, with your health care. We should give people choices.”
Meanwhile, just one week ago, Ryan said that “moving from an opposition party to a governing party comes with growing pains.”
On Monday, White House press secretary Sean Spicer said that Trump was open to working with Democrats on health care reform following last week’s failure of a Republican effort to repeal and replace ObamaCare.
“Starting Friday afternoon through late yesterday, [Trump] has received a number of calls, as well as other members of the senior staff that have been working on healthcare, from members of both sides saying that they would like to work together, offer up ideas and have suggestions about how to come to a resolution on this and get a House vote on this,” Spicer told reporters.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), the highest ranking Democrat in Washington, told Politico on Tuesday that Trump “moved so far over to the right that it’s virtually impossible to work with him.”
Still yet, forty-four members of the Senate Democratic caucus reached out to Trump in signed a letter to signal they are open to working with him on health care, but Ryan seems to have slammed that door. Opportunities don’t come often. Ryan wouldn’t work with Democrats before and ended up offering Americans a shit sandwich for health care because the government might kill Nana and socialism is bad. Have you ever noticed that Republicans who hate government are actually working for the government they claim to hate so much?
