Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte called President Barack Obama a “son of a whore” but now he’s expressing regret that those words might have come across as a personal attack. He didn’t mean to sound personal while calling Obama’s mother a whore. That needed to be repeated. Duterte also called Obama a “son of a bitch.” It sounds like the the president of the Philippines has Mommy issues.

The Guardian reports:

In a statement read by his spokesman, Duterte said the remark was not intended as a personal insult. “While the immediate cause was my strong comments to certain press questions that elicited concern and distress, we also regret that it came across as a personal attack on the US president,” Ernesto Abella quoted Duterte as saying.

He added that a meeting with the US had been “mutually agreed upon to be moved to a later date”.

Duterte made his initial remarks following weeks of criticism from the US against extrajudicial killings in the Philippines’ bloody drug war. “Son of a whore, I will curse you in that forum,” Duterte was quoted as saying.

President Obama said he was trying to schedule “some constructive, productive conversations” with Duterte but the meeting was cancelled. Obama said, “Clearly, he’s a colorful guy.”

But instead, Duterte lowered the bar and now he’s expressing regret.

“I do not want to quarrel with him. He’s the most powerful president of any country on the planet,” Duterte said. He said, he was angry at members of the US state department who “keep on mouthing” statements about human rights.

Duterte has called for killing anyone in his country who uses or sells narcotics. He went as far as to urge citizens with guns to shoot and kill drug dealers who resist arrest and fight back.

“Please feel free to call us, the police, or do it yourself if you have the gun, you have my support,” Duterte said in a speech.

He seems really nice, don’t you think?

Duterte has been suspected of playing a role in many killings of suspected criminals by motorcycle-riding assassins dubbed the “Davao death squads”. Human rights watchdogs say he has not been criminally charged because nobody has dared to testify against him in court.

And suspects have been killed.
