Shortly after the inauguration, British Prime Minister Theresa May visited Washington and extended an invitation to Donald Trump to visit the U.K. at his earliest convenience. Trump accepted at the time, but recent reports have rumored that he may be considering canceling or postponing his visit. Mr. Trump faces threats of large scale protests by the British public should he enter their country. According to Labour Leader Jeremy Corbyn,

Cancellation of President Trump’s state visit is welcome, especially after his attack on London’s mayor & withdrawal from #ParisClimateDeal.

Trump criticized London mayor Sadiq Khan on Twitter shortly after the London Bridge attack.

Khan subsequently called for Trump’s visit to the U.K. to be canceled.

Queen Elizabeth is in a difficult situation..

It would be unheard of for her to cancel her invitation for the leader of a country who has traditionally been Britain’s closest ally to visit the U.K. — But that doesn’t mean she has to go out of her way to make him feel welcome. During a speech on Wednesday to recognize the opening of Parliament, Queen Elizabeth was sure to mention how much she is looking forward to upcoming visits from world leaders such as the King and Queen of Spain. She failed to mention Trump’s visit at all. Said the Queen,

Prince Philip and I look forward to welcoming their majesties King Felipe and Queen Letizia of Spain on a state visit in July.

Unsaid but insinuated: and we hope like hell that the crazy orange narcissist currently running the U.S. gets the hint and chooses to cancel his visit.

Failing to mention a visit from your closest ally during a speech in which you traditionally list all upcoming state visits is huge, and has many speculating that Trump’s visit may have already been unofficially canceled. Whether the cancellation came from Trump because his little tiny ego would not be able to take the inevitable protests that would occur, or from British leadership who want to distance themselves from their former ally is still unclear.
