No matter how they try to change the subject, the White House cannot manage to talk away the fact that the administration had two alleged wife-beaters on the public dime. And until they confront the issue head-on (don’t hold your breath waiting for that), the daily press briefing will be exactly like Monday’s.
A reporter asked Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders why the president still hadn’t condemned domestic violence in all forms. Sanders replied:
“I spoke with the president and those are actually his words that he gave me directly today, It’s my job to speak on behalf of the president. I spoke to him and he gave that message directly to me and I read it directly to you.”
When another reporter noted that Vice President Mike Pence had called domestic assault appalling but Trump still hadn’t done so, Sanders had this to say:
“The president has been clear multiple times through myself and others in the administration that we condemn domestic violence.”
However, Trump himself has not actually said the words, and considering that he’s been accused on at least a dozen occasions of being a sexual assaulter, it does make you wonder why he cannot just read a statement and be done with it, no matter how hypocritical it would be.
A reporter then asked:
“Why do you have to say it? Why can’t he say it?
“He said that he wishes Porter well and people should have due process. But he hasn’t addressed the victims of domestic violence.”
That led Sanders to rely on the well-known “alternative facts” that this administration is famous for:
“He literally dictated that statement to me. And so I’m not sure how that’s not the president speaking.”
Everyone who believes Donald Trump dictated a statement to Sanders on the subject of domestic violence, please stand on your head and recite the Magna Carta from memory. At least that would be entertaining.
