SF Mayor Bans Taxpayer-Funded Travel To Indiana Over Anti-Gay Law

In response to Indiana Gov. Mike Pence (R) signing anti-gay legislation which allows businesses in that state to not serve gay people, a backlash has ensued.

Talking Points Memo reports:

San Francisco Mayor Edwin Lee (D) has decided to ban city-funded trips to Indiana in response to Indiana’s new anti-gay law.

Lee’s announcement follows Pence signing legislation into law that allows businesses in the state to not serve gay people because of religious objections.

“We stand united as San Franciscans to condemn Indiana’s new discriminatory law, and will work together to protect the civil rights of all Americans including lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender adults,” Lee said in a statement, according to the Indianapolis Star on Friday. “San Francisco taxpayers will not subsidize legally sanctioned-discrimination against lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people by the state of Indiana.”…

Pence, in a radio interview after he signed the law, was pressed on if there was any justification for the law. He couldn’t come up with any recent examples.

Businesses like Salesforce are rethinking bringing new business to the state and are pulling out current business. Gen Con will move its conventions to another state in the future when their contract is up. The NCAA has expressed concern over the new law. Yelp has promised to scale back business in the state.

The Disciples of Christ Church is pissed, ya’ll.

The leaders of the church sent a letter to Pence telling him they would be forced to reconsider holding their 2017 convention in Indianapolis. Todd Adams, the associate general minister and vice president of the Indianapolis-based denomination, said, ”Our perspective is that hate and bigotry wrapped in religious freedom is still hate and bigotry.”

Indiana’s new “religious freedom” law was signed by Gov. Mike Pence in a private ceremony Thursday.

Discrimination worked out so well the last time, huh?
