Ted Cruz Demands Same Relief Money For Texas He Denied To Victims Of Hurricane Sandy

U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, the man who has rubbed everyone the wrong way since he joined Congress in 2013, wants Federal aid for Hurricane Harvey-ravaged Texas– and he wants it NOW.

The political hypocrisy, it burns.

Mind you, it was Cruz who voted against Federal funding for victims of Hurricane Sandy, the deadliest and most destructive hurricane in the Atlantic in 2012. Sandy had an impact on 24 states, including the entire eastern seaboard from Florida to Maine and west across the Appalachian Mountains to Michigan and Wisconsin, and devastated New Jersey and New York.

Speaking to Fox News on Sunday, Cruz demanded immediate aid money for his home state, following the damage Hurricane Harvey continues to wreak in Texas.

“This is a 500-year flood and Harvey is predicted to stay here and keep dumping a significant amount of water on the region that’s going to put even greater pressure,” said Cruz.

The “500-year flood” is a common term used among experts and members of the US government for describing a flood of exceptional magnitude. Ironically, he ignored the term when it was applied to the funding of relief monies for victims of Superstorm Sandy.

The previous Friday, Cruz and his state’s senior senator, John Cornyn, wrote the administration a letter demanding a federal disaster declaration in order to make available “any and all emergency protective measures” for the state.

The letter read, in part:

Given the potential catastrophic impact that the Hurricane may have on Texas communities, we strongly support this request and urge you to provide any and all emergency protective measures available by a major disaster declaration.

It should be noted that Cornyn, too, joined Cruz voting against funding a Hurricane Sandy disaster relief package in 2013.

“Emergency relief for the families who are suffering from this natural disaster should not be used as a Christmas tree for billions in unrelated spending, including … upgrades to National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) airplanes,” Cornyn said at the time.

I guess Cornyn didn’t know it’s the NOAA planes that monitor hurricanes. If he did, perhaps the current damage in his home state might have been diminished.

Of course, all of us good and decent Americans want to be certain that all the states affected by Hurricane Harvey receive the assistance they require in this critical time of need. But the irony astounds me that the same two Texas politicos who didn’t give a damn about the Northeast victims of Hurricane Sandy are today begging for help for their own.

  1. I’ve said it before, the people in the GOP have no empathy. They only look to see if it affects them or not. If this storm had hit Florida and not Texas, they’d both still be saying no relief.

  2. Hello friends.

Are the comments really back? I have missed my old hangout. I am a proud citizen of the deep state. I come from a long line of DC area civil servants..
