The Fate Of Puerto Rico Is In Trump’s Tiny Hands And He Can’t Hold On

When category 4 Hurricane Maria devastated the island of Puerto Rico on September 20 the United States should have immediately gone to her aid.

Eight days after the storm there is still no power other than a few generators. Those provide power for the hospitals. There is no water. Food, fuel, and cellular phone usage is severely limited.

The island of Puerto Rico is a U.S. Territory. As a commonwealth, she is self-governed, but her residents are subject to U.S. laws. They pay income taxes to the U.S. government.

So why won’t the president of the United States help? Donald Trump has offered very little except empty platitudes on Twitter:

Six days after the storm, Trump sent out a series of tweets that seemed to BLAME Puerto Rico for her problems rather than offering any help:

And more empty platitudes promising to help:

And then there were the excuses:

Just because Trump won’t help PR doesn’t mean other countries aren’t willing to step up. They are, but the U.S. Department of Homeland Security won’t let them because of an archaic piece of legislation named The Jones Act:

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security can easily issue waivers to the Jones Act’s restrictions on foreign built and foreign flagged vessels–but has summarily refused to do so thus far. This refusal comes even though such waivers have been asked for by members of Congress on both sides of the aisle.

The Jones Act doesn’t prohibit foreign ships from docking in Puerto Rico, but it does it does impose exorbitant fees on all non-US registered vessels so that any supplies they deliver cost twice as much. Waiving the requirements of the Jones Act would allow PR to get supplies without creating an even larger burden on the already-crippled economy.

Is Trump just being petty because 74 percent of the voters on the island preferred Hillary Clinton? Is it because he JUST learned they were U.S. citizens? Is it because he really doesn’t even know WHERE Puerto Rico is?

Whatever the reason, one thing is certain. The lack of response to the needs of the citizens in Puerto Rico defines Trump in an unfavorable light.
