Republicans love to push for parents’ right to send their kids to private Christian schools on taxpayers’ dime, but if these schools teaching that the world is 10,000 years old isn’t enough to convince everyone that’s a bad idea, maybe it’s time to consider this latest example of the rampant racism that consumes private Christian institutions.
An instructor at Our Redeemer Lutheran School in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin decided that a good assignment for kids learning about slavery was for them to list a few of the positive aspects of slavery.
Before you ask, no we are not f*cking with you:
The English (not history) assignment instructs students to first list “three good reasons” for slavery then follow it up with some negatives. You know, for balance and stuff.
“It’s highly offensive and insensitive. I was in shock. I couldn’t believe they sent something like that home,” says Trameka Brown-Berry, the parent of an African-American child in the class. “Not only was my son in an awful position, but the students who weren’t black — that’s what keeps racism going.”
Naturally, her son said “f*ck that” to the first part of the question and informed his teacher that “there is no good reason for slavery” before listing some of the horrible things done to slaves for the second part.
Principal Jim Van Dellen defended the assignment by informing FOX6 that “the purpose of the assignment was not, in any way, to have students argue that slavery is acceptable” despite the assignment literally telling students to list reasons why slavery was awesome.
Ultimately, the school made a “PR move” and “apologized” to parents after the backlash became too heavy for them to carry:
The school refuses to say whether the teacher who handed out the horrific assignment is being disciplined but we can safely assume that if they won’t say, the answer is “probably not.”
