Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA), the ranking Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, has no patience for the Primate in Chief’s true reason for being in the White House: his bottomless, embarrassing need for admiration. You know, the kind of admiration slaves have for their master’s generosity with the whip.
Here’s what Trump tweeted earlier today:
Now that the three basketball players are out of China and saved from years in jail, LaVar Ball, the father of LiAngelo, is unaccepting of what I did for his son and that shoplifting is no big deal. I should have left them in jail!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) November 19, 2017
He’s referring to athletes from UCLA who got caught shoplifting Louis Vuitton sunglasses in China, and for whom Donald Trump intervened personally with Chinese President Xi Jinping to have them released from jail.
What Trump did was good, right? So what rubbed Schiff the wrong way? Here’s what he tweeted in response:
The President would have left American students in a foreign jail because their families didn’t lavish sufficient praise on him. How can someone in such a big office be so small? https://t.co/g3oa0o9aBU
— Adam Schiff (@RepAdamSchiff) November 19, 2017
He’s referring to LaVar Ball, who pooh-poohed Trump’s involvement when asked by ESPN about it:
Who? What was he over there for? Don’t tell me nothing. Everybody wants to make it seem like he helped me out.
Trump was already in China when the shoplifting occurred, and Ball went there to help his son afterwards.
Trump’s intervention was the right thing to do because it comes with the office, but even the mere suggestion that he shouldn’t have done it because Ball didn’t lick his boots afterwards is exactly what Schiff said: small.
Lest we feel sorry for Ball, however, realize that he out-trumped Trump by boosting his own brand, which includes an athletic apparel line, Big Baller Brand, and a reality show on Facebook, “Ball in the Family,” with his wife and sons, seen here:
See what we did there?
