Donald Trump just got his invitation to the annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner, and…Surprise! The GOP’s president RSVPed via Twitter to say he’s not coming. Now Twitter’s giving him a good, sound mocking.
I will not be attending the White House Correspondents' Association Dinner this year. Please wish everyone well and have a great evening!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) February 25, 2017
CBS News explains the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner has been a yearly tradition since 1920. The notoriously dour Calvin Coolidge came that year, and sitting U.S. presidents have come come and given a speech ever since.
As NPR points out, only two presidents, Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan, have ever skipped the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. Both had good excuses: Ronald Reagan had just gotten shot, and Richard Nixon had just gotten busted for the Watergate cover up.
Like Trump, Nixon had an adversarial relationship with the press. Just as Donald Trump tweeted that the press the “enemy of the American people,” Richard Nixon once told the chairman of the Join Chiefs of Staff, “The press is your enemy.”
And make no mistake, refusing that invitation is an open declaration of war. After all, the journalists who throw the White House Correspondents’ Dinners each year spend a lot of time with the president. The president and this group of reporters normally enjoy a cordial, if guarded, working relationship.
Despite the breaking of tradition, the show must go on. Jeff Mason, the WHCA president announced:
The White House Correspondents’ Association looks forward to having its annual dinner on April 29. The WHCA takes note of President Donald Trump’s announcement on Twitter that he does not plan to attend the dinner, which has been and will continue to be a celebration of the First Amendment and the important role played by an independent news media in a healthy republic. We look forward to shining a spotlight at the dinner on some of the best political journalism of the past year and recognizing the promising students who represent the next generation of our profession.
And just in case Donald Trump doesn’t get the message, he also tweeted it.

Twitter hilariously responds to Donald Trump bailing out of the White House Correspondents’ Dinner.
Jeff Mason’s response was polite and cordial towards Donald Trump. But many others on Twitter were not as understanding or forgiving.
“You dropped this,” one Twitizen replied with a photo of a baby’s pacifier.
Hey @realDonaldTrump you dropped this…

Another suggested we have Barack Obama speak in what would have been Donald Trump’s slot, as a fundraiser for the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU).

Some called Donald Trump out as a cowards:
Of course he's not going to the White House correspondents' dinner.. pic.twitter.com/VZZSsL841j

White House Correspondents Dinner is like that time Trump pretended his foot hurt so he didn't have to attend the Vietnam War
— Trumptastrophe (@atrumptastrophe) February 26, 2017
Reagan missed the White House Correspondents' Dinner because he had been shot; Trump because he's been shooting himself in the foot daily.

– Very swampy!
Meabnwhile, Lord Marmalade is ducking the White House Correspondents Dinner. More his Total War on the media. Sad. pic.twitter.com/5eFcfnzF7v

And now can Donald Trump stand up to ISIS when he can’t even face the press at an annual black tie dinner?
Some say if Donald Trump boycotts the White House Correspondents first, then they can’t boycott him. They invited him to the dinner, but that doesn’t mean they have to eat what he’s serving.
They can't boycott your White House Correspondents' Association dinner if you boycott it first. pic.twitter.com/59Lfwd4kvY

Others weren’t one bit surprised.
Trump not attending the White House Correspondents Dinner is the least surprising thing ever. Yet I'm sure fake newsers are freaking out!

Speaking of Richard Nixon, Donald Trump very well might be headed down the same road.

Trump will not attend this year's White House Correspondents Dinner on April 30th, because of the good chance he'll be impeached already.
— Tea Pain (@TeaPainUSA) February 25, 2017
I will not be attending the White House Correspondents Dinner this year as I will be in a meeting with my lawyers all that month #russiagate

Many hope the White house Correspondents will replace Donald Trump with Saturday Night Live’s Alec Baldwin.
Since Trump is not attending the White House Correspondents dinner, Alec Baldwin should go in his place.

Though Meryl Streep also has some fans.
Since Trump won't attend the White House Correspondents Dinner Meryl Streep should go as him.
She'd probably win another Oscar for it too! pic.twitter.com/O1zF1qDre9

There are also some who aren’t fans of the White House Correspondents’ Dinner and think Donald Trump made a smart move.
Whoever invented the White House Correspondents' Dinner should be punished by being forced to attend the White House Correspondents' Dinner.

The White House Correspondents Dinner was a hideous circle jerk that confirmed America’s worst suspicions about the press. Happy if gone.

It may be just as well…when people still thought Donald Trump was going, CNN mulled backing out, and then Bloomberg canceled their White House Correspondents’ Dinner afterparty.

Trump repeats the same lies & attack them. Press should boycott the White House correspondents dinner. pic.twitter.com/0tzbVMbPXk
