Donald Trump’s words following the deadliest mass shooting in the history of Texas is reminiscent of The Onion’s headline: ‘No Way To Prevent This,’ Says Only Nation Where This Regularly Happens.’ Even though Trump overturned an Obama policy in February which would make it harder for people with mental illness to buy guns, Trump called it a “mental health” issue and said it was not a “guns situation.” The shooter used a Ruger AR-556 rifle to murder 26 people after walking into the First Baptist Church in a rural town outside of San Antonio on Sunday.
“Mental health is your problem here. This was a very, based on preliminary reports, a very deranged individual, a lot of problems over a long period of time. We have a lot of mental health problems in our country, as do other countries,” said Trump, the man who overturned the Obama policy. “But this isn’t a guns situation.”
Trump said that it’s a “little bit soon” to be talking about guns following yet another mass shooting, then suggested that the death toll could have been higher if it wasn’t for another armed individual who opened fire on the assailant, according to ABC.
“Fortunately somebody else had a gun that was shooting in the opposite direction otherwise … it would have been much worse,” Trump said. “This is a mental health problem at the highest level.”
“Who would ever think a thing like this could happen?” Trump asked.
Welp, pretty much all of us knew this would happen again, including the satirical site ‘The Onion’ since after every mass shooting the same headline is used. Our ineffective, NRA-bought politicians, including shooting victim Steve Scalise, will turn a blind eye to murderous rampages on U.S. soil if a gun is used and if the perpetrator is white. We need Extreme Vetting for gun purchases.
The shooter wasn’t a legal gun owner, but this country is saturated with guns and somehow he bought the firearm from the Academy Sports & Outdoors store in San Antonio by simply checking the box to indicate he didn’t have a disqualifying criminal history.
It was just last month that a gunman opened fire in Las Vegas killing 58 people. But it’s still ‘too soon’ to talk about guns. It will never be the right time for Republicans until there’s no one left to vote.
307 mass shootings have occurred so far in 2017.
