Presumptive GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump told the New York Times in an interview that Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg should leave the Supreme Court “as soon as possible.”
The thin-skinned candidate was upset that Ginsburg weighed in on his candidacy, saying, “I can’t imagine what this place would be — I can’t imagine what the country would be — with Donald Trump as our president.”
“For the country, it could be four years. For the court, it could be — I don’t even want to contemplate that,” she added, then joked about moving to New Zealand if Trump’s political aspirations come to fruition.
Well that was too much for Trump, who apparently doesn’t realize that a Justice servicing on the Supreme Court is appointed that position for a lifetime. This is not the reality show The Apprentice where Trump can just say, “You’re fired!” It doesn’t’ work like that.
“I think it’s highly inappropriate that a United States Supreme Court judge gets involved in a political campaign, frankly,” Trump told the Times. “I think it’s a disgrace to the court and I think she should apologize to the court. I couldn’t believe it when I saw it.”
“That she should be saying that? It’s so beneath the court for her to be making statements like that,” Trump continued. “It only energizes my base even more. And I would hope that she would get off the court as soon as possible.”
On Monday, Ginsburg didn’t back down, saying, “He has no consistency about him. He says whatever comes into his head at the moment.” “He really has an ego. … How has he gotten away with not turning over his tax returns? The press seems to be very gentle with him on that,” she said.
Ginsburg, 83, has said she will serve on the Supreme Court as long as she can do it “full steam.”
Ginsburg called him a ‘faker’ and she’s not wrong. How long will it take for Trump to say that Justice Ginsburg has blood coming out of her ‘whatever’? Trump is upset because Ginsburg isn’t being politically correct.
This is why elections are so important. As Bernie Sanders emphasized today while endorsing Hillary Clinton, the Supreme Court is at stake. Trump said he would appoint Supreme Court judges who are pro-life. Sanders said it’s time we appoint Justices who will overturn Citizens United as well as those who will ‘defend a woman’s right to choose.’ He said we need Justices who will defend minorities, immigrants and the LGBT community.
