Donald Trump and his BFF Vladimir Putin spoke this weekend in Vietnam during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit. After that, for some weird reason, the former reality show star (again) denied that Russia interfered in the 2016 U.S. presidential election as he lobbed insults at our country’s intelligence agencies. Because that’s not weird enough, Putin then denied that the two leaders spoke about meddling in our elections.
The CIA on Saturday said its director, Mike Pompeo, Trump’s own nominee for the post, “stands by” the intelligence community’s declassified report which had concluded that Russia ran an influence campaign aimed at helping the former reality show star get the coveted keys to the White House, according to The Hill.
“The director stands by and has always stood by the January 2017 intelligence community assessment entitled: ‘Assessing Russian Activities and Intentions in Recent U.S. Elections.’ The intelligence assessment with regard to Russian election meddling has not changed,” a spokesperson for the agency told The Hill.
Trump’s comments this morning about the discussion (which Putin denies) were truly bizarre.
Trump alleged that Putin is “very insulted by” accusations of meddling in the 2016 U.S. presidential elections which the so-called president said, “is not a good thing for our country.”
“He said he didn’t meddle. He said he didn’t meddle. I asked him again. You can only ask so many times,” Trump said.
“But I just asked him again, and he said he absolutely did not meddle in our election,” he continued in his defense of Putin. “He did not do what they’re saying he did.”
Trump was asked if he believed Putin and he said, “I think that he is very, very strong in the fact that he didn’t do it.”
But, you know, U.S. Intelligence Agencies strongly disagree with Trump. It’s as if Trump’s own CIA pick was forced to release a statement because his dumbass boss keeps saying things to undermine our country. One might call Trump’s remarks traitorous. Pompeo was a Kansas representative on the Republican National Committee so he’s not a Democrat. Today, Trump called former CIA director John Brennan, former director of national intelligence James Clapper, and former FBI Director James Comey, “political hacks” for reaching the same conclusion that Pompeo stands by.
Trump didn’t just launch a war against Intelligence agencies. He launched one against intelligence.
