The CEO of Walmart on Tuesday responded on Twitter to the governor of Arkansas signing the anti-gay bill which opens to the doors to discrimination against gays and lesbians, which follows Indiana’s passage of a similar bill.
“Every day in our stores, we see firsthand the benefits diversity and inclusion have on our associates, customers and communities we serve. It all starts with our core basic belief of respect for the individual,” Walmart said in a statement on Twitter. “Today’s passage of HB1228 threatens to undermine the spirit of inclusion present throughout the state of Arkansas and does not reflect the values we proudly uphold.”
“For these reasons, we are asking Governor Hutchinson to veto this legislation,” the statement concludes.
Hutchinson expressed reservations about an earlier bill but recently said he would sign the measure if it “reaches my desk in similar form as to what has been passed in 20 other states.”
Walmart CEO Doug McMillion disagrees.
Can you possibly imagine being a business owner who is frightened of a gay person spending money at their bakery? Baking the cake will not make the baker gay. The cake is not gay or heterosexual. You won’t go to hell for baking that cake. It’s just a friggin’ cake.
The fear is palpable.
The Republican Governors who are passing these bills are driving business out of their states. It’s bad for America and it doesn’t say much about our humanity.
