White House Advisers Are Only Showing Trump Poll Numbers That Won’t Hurt His Feelings

Donald Trump’s skin is so thin that his advisers are holding back poll numbers from their boss which aren’t in his favor — and that’s pretty much all of them. Politico reports that aides in the White House often show Trump polls designed to make him feel good, according to aides and advisers. It sounds like the aides and advisers are accidentally snitching on Donald.

Instead, the poll numbers they show Donald are the ones of Trump supporters in order to be sure his base is still strong, which it basically is, although that is dwindling slightly. The aides also show him Rasmussen polls and that pollster is known for being biased in favor of conservatives.

“The polls are about the base,” one adviser said. “He cares about the base.”

This past week Trump shared a Rassmussen poll on Twitter saying he has a 46 percent approval rating, and wrote, “One of the most accurate polls last time around. But #FakeNews likes to say we’re in the 30’s. They are wrong. Some people think numbers could be in the 50’s.” The poll, by the way, also showed that he has a 53 percent disapproval rating but he failed to mention that.

Senior officials said the internal polls aren’t trustworthy because they are “delusional” or “just not accurate.”

But Trump is aware of his plummeting poll numbers:

But while Trump’s aides sometimes go out of their way to give him the rosiest view, Trump himself tracks the Gallup data almost every day, two advisers say, and always knows what the numbers say. When Trump decided to shake up his senior staff this summer, he frequently cited his sinking poll numbers to advisers and friends as a reason he needed to make a change.

It means Trump often has a complicated routine of keeping up with polls—which paint a dismal picture, giving him an average approval rating of 38 percent, according to RealClearPolitics—and getting upset privately, while blustering and calling them “fake” in public.

Trump is the least popular president in the history of polling. Hillary won the popular vote and he’s never gotten over that which is why he still seems to be in campaign mode against his former rival. Just this morning, he called Clinton a ‘loser.’ Can you imagine the reaction from conservatives if, after President Obama’s election, he obsessively tweeted about Mitt Romney for a year? The outrage would be deafening. If Trump wants better poll numbers, perhaps he should stop doing things that freak people out, like for example, announcing on Twitter that he would lift a ban on big-game hunting trophies. That’s not going to help deep red states and/or coal miners, but it will help wealthy hunters who want to murder elephants. After a backlash, Trump announced that he will put that decision on hold. Or blaming ‘both sides’ after Nazis marched in his name carrying tiki torches while shouting Nazi Germany era slogans — a hate rally which resulted in the murder of a woman.
